Water heater replacement & installation
A replacement is more than swapping a tank. Sizing, venting, power, clearances and the permit all belong in a written scope.

1. Size by how you use hot water
Tank size in gallons is only part of the story. The first-hour rating on the yellow EnergyGuide label estimates how much hot water the heater can deliver in an hour of busy use — a better match for morning showers back to back. Tankless units are sized by flow rate (gallons per minute) at your incoming water temperature, which is colder in New England winters.
2. Fuel and venting
- Like-for-like gas replacement may reuse an existing vent if it's in good condition and correctly sized — the installer should confirm.
- Switching to power-vent or tankless gas usually means new vent piping and an electrical outlet.
- Removing a heater from a shared chimney can change how the remaining appliance drafts.
3. Electrical needs
Electric tanks need a dedicated circuit sized for the element wattage. Heat pump water heaters have their own requirements. Some homes need panel work — ask early.
4. Space, clearances and access
New units can be taller or wider than the old one. Measure height, the door or stair path, and clearances around the heater. Ask about an expansion tank, a drain pan, proper supports and a relief-valve discharge pipe that meets code.
5. Permit and inspection
The Meriden Building Department lists plumbing permits for new water heaters. Ask who pulls the permit and whether the final inspection is part of the job. See the permit guide.
Indirect (boiler-fed) tanks
Many Central CT homes with oil or gas boilers heat domestic water through an indirect tank — brands such as Amtrol BoilerMate or HTP SuperStor are common names you may see on the label. Replacing one involves the boiler zone, circulator or zone valve, aquastat and piping, so the contractor should assess the boiler and controls on site. Naming a brand here is not a dealer relationship or a compatibility claim.
6. Removal and disposal
Confirm in writing whether hauling away the old unit is included and whether any fee applies.

Planning prices for this job
| Job | Planning range | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Standard 40/50-gal gas or baseline electric tank replacement | $1,750–$2,850 | Like-for-like swap; venting, expansion tank, T&P discharge or permit corrections can move it. |
| Indirect (boiler-fed) tank replacement | $2,200–$3,600 | Tank only; boiler zoning, controls and compatibility are assessed on site. |
| Hybrid heat pump water heater upgrade | $2,600–$4,100 | Gross before any incentive; may need a 240V circuit, condensate drain and room airflow. |
| Tankless gas conversion | $3,300–$5,100 | Gas line sizing, new venting and descaling valves often drive the range. |
Indicative planning figures supplied for this site's brief, shown as gross ranges before any rebate. They are not verified local quotes or a price survey. Venting, electrical or fuel changes, access, removal, permits and eligible incentives all change the final written quote.
